As we have said before, the state of Colorado takes instances of sexual assault against students by teachers extremely seriously, even if the relationship appeared to be consensual. This is because teachers are believed to be in a position of power and can easily take advantage of students.
A former Fountain-Fort Carson teacher has been the lasted teacher in the state to be accused of having a sexual relationship with a student, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported this week. Allegedly, the 36-year-old teacher was recently arrested after he admitted to having sex with a 17-year-old female student.
The ex-teacher now faces a Class 4 felony after being charged with sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust on Tuesday. He reportedly resigned from his teaching position with the Fountain-Fort Carson School District the day before, the Fountain Police Department said.
Apparently, the mother of the 17-year-old girl reported the teacher on June 9 after she found text messages that were sexual in nature on her daughter’s cell phone and the daughter admitted that they were from the teacher.
Police found many text messages on the 17-year-old’s cell phone from the teacher, with some supposedly describing the two having sexual intercourse. The girl told child advocates that the two had sex twice, both times in May and one time allegedly at the school during a basketball tournament.
The former teacher had just been named the dean of students before he resigned this week. He had also been the school’s varsity basketball coach for nine years and helped coach the school’s football team.
The teacher told police that the relationship between him and the 17-year-old started as a friendship and “just unfolded” when he and his wife began having marital problems.
Even though the 17-year-old reportedly told police that the relationship between the two had been consensual, the relationship is still considered criminal and the teacher could face a very serious prison sentence, depending on what his defense attorney can work out with prosecutors.
