The importance of an effective criminal defense attorney is never more crucial than when years of a defendant’s life are at stake.

A Colorado Springs man is now looking at spending anywhere from the next four years to the rest of his life behind bars after he was sentenced for sexual assault on his teenage stepdaughter.

The 30-year-old man was convicted in May of the crime, but was sentenced yesterday in the Fourth Judicial District Court. He had been found guilty of six counts of sexual assault on a child in a position of trust.

Colorado law allows the state to incarcerate sex offenders until they are deemed to no longer be a threat to reoffend.

The stepdaughter was 15 at the time of the assault. She is 19 now and facing her own legal difficulties.

She and her aunt were accused of child abuse after an incident in April in which the 19-year-old’s infant was allegedly left under a cold shower, bound with tape.

Just over two weeks, the 19-year-old accepted a plea bargain in the case, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

She faces anywhere from 14 years to 28 years in prison when she is sentenced.

She has apparently agreed to testify that the aunt dropped the 20-month-old on her head twice before putting the infant in the shower.

The stepfather and stepdaughter in these cases are likely going to spend significant amounts of time in prison, even if they serve the minimum sentences.

When the stakes are this high, it’s absolutely critical to have effective legal representation.
