Colorado Springs man charged with sexually assaulting child
A Colorado Springs man faces several serious sex crimes charges after police say he sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl.
He faces accusations of sexual assault, sexual exploitation of a child and possession of child pornography.
Police say the 46-year-old man watched pornography with the girl and had “repeated sexual contact” with her.
He was arrested earlier this month after a five-month investigation.
Officials say the man is a photographer who has taken photos of local dance troupes and also middle school students.
Police say they have no evidence that the man had inappropriate contact with any middle school students.
The alleged activities involving the 11-year-old reportedly happened in the man’s home.
Police also say that in the man’s home, they found pornographic images of the girl, her sister and other, unidentified children.
One media outlet reports that police found more than 700 images on a computer hard drive, though it wasn’t clear if authorities contend that the images are child porn.
Here in Colorado, the punishments for sexual assault can be severe. A conviction can result in punishments that include life in prison. However, in some cases, punishment can consist of intensive sex offender probation.
In any case, the offender will have to register as a sex offender for life.
With charges of possession of child pornography, the punishments can be just as harsh. Again, a life sentence is possible in some of those cases.
The best recourse for those accused is to decline to speak to prosecutors or police before discussing all legal options with an experienced criminal defense attorney.
