Colorado DUI news: Super Bowl weekend arrests down

Good news is in about the Super Bowl. While the game didn't feature Colorado's favorite team, that Super weekend did feature fewer DUI arrests here than last year.

It was the second year in a row that arrests for driving under the influence were down. Even better news: There were no alcohol-related traffic deaths anywhere in the state in the Super Bowl enforcement period, which ran from the Friday before the game through Monday, Feb. 6.

Colorado State Patrol authorities said some of the decline in arrests might be attributable to that Friday's snow storm. It might well have kept people at home to enjoy the game, rather than traveling to celebrate with family and friends.

Regardless, 274 people were arrested for suspected drunken driving by the 66 participating law enforcement agencies.

The cities with the highest number of arrests were Denver, with 33, Colorado Springs, 26, and Aurora, 21.

Two years ago, nearly 100 more DUI arrests were recorded across the state. In 2010, there were 371 arrests, dropping to 303 last year.

"The numbers were down overall, but we still saw the biggest number of arrests on Super Bowl Sunday," said a Colorado State Patrol spokesperson. He said those arrested are facing an average of $10,270 in fines and costs.

The State Patrol said that because St. Patrick's Day falls on a Saturday this year, law enforcement agencies will again make DUI enforcement a top priority that weekend.

For anyone facing a DUI charge, the best course of action is to talk to an experienced, effective attorney who can help you sort through your options and resolve your legal problems.
