Former cop in Colorado Springs court today on child porn charges

A former police sergeant is today in District Court in Colorado Springs as a jury trial on possession of child pornography charges gets underway.

The former Aurora, Colorado, officer was arrested by Colorado Springs police in December of 2010 and accused of possessing hundreds of child porn videos.

Prosecutors claim he downloaded child pornography images onto his personal laptop that he brought with him to work.

The 39-year-old man lives in Peyton, about 25 miles northeast of Colorado Springs.

He was arrested on suspicion of sexual exploitation of a child, a class 3 felony, when he was booked into El Paso County Jail.

Police said at the time that there was no evidence that the former officer had sexual contact with children.

His arrest followed an investigation by the Internet Crimes against Children Task Force. That police unit received information from a Westminster officer who said he'd come across illegal images while examining an online file-sharing network.

Investigators said they traced some of the materials to an internet account registered to the 14-year veteran of the Aurora police force.

Officers said when they searched his Peyton home, they found laptops from which child pornography had been removed.

Police later confiscated his personal laptop from an Aurora police facility. They claim that they more than 200 child porn videos on that device.

The man's city-owned computer contained no illegal images, police said.

He now faces more than 100 child porn-related charges.

However, there have been serious procedural questions raised in the case involving prosecutors delaying the sharing of evidence with the defense. The defense was apparently not allowed access to the seized computers for more than a year.

Many observers are keenly interested in the case because of ongoing discovery problems with the El Paso County District Attorney's office.
