Father of man arrested for manslaughter says son should be freed

Parents have a natural tendency to want to protect their children from harm. That's apparently what the father of a Colorado Springs man arrested for reckless manslaughter was trying to do when he spoke with a reporter for the Gazette.

The father said his son was like a brother to the 22-year-old man who died after an incident early last Friday morning.

The father said the man who died is the victim of an accident, not a murder.

However, the El Paso County Coroner has ruled the man's death a homicide. The arrest affidavit has been sealed by a judge, so details of the case are limited to what the father told the press.

The father says his son and the victim were at one point roommates and were together the night of the victim's death. The victim was apparently angry with his son and there was "an uncomfortable situation," the father of the arrested man told the paper.

Then the arrested man and the victim fell down a flight of stairs. That fall is what the father says caused the man's death.

However, the father isn't sure why the pair fell.

"I don't know whether they had been drinking or not; there's always more to the story than you know," he told the Gazette.

The father called the victim "a good kid" and said he can't imagine what the mother of the victim must be going through now.

However, he was adamant that his son shouldn't be charged with a crime in what he views as a tragic accident.
