Former Colorado Springs man accused of murder

The body of a 56-year-old murder victim was recently found in the woods near her Mississippi home. Authorities suspect the victim's 29-year-old son in the woman's strangulation.

Both the suspect and the victim lived in Colorado Springs until they moved to Gulfport, Mississippi, in 2002.

A friend of the suspect's mother had spoken with the victim daily since they became friends in 2005, as their husbands served together in South Korea. The last time the friend spoke with the victim was on Sunday, two days before the attack. She called the victim's cell phone on Monday, but got no response. She called again Tuesday, when the suspect apparently answered the victim's phone. The suspect reportedly told his mother's friend that his mother felt ill and was asleep.

Gulfport chief of police obtained and issued an arrest warrant for the suspect the same day the victim's body was discovered. The police chief states that the suspect was located the next day in the neighboring state of Alabama by the Fugitive Task Force of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The 29-year-old man currently is being detained in a Mobile, Alabama jail, waiting to be extradited back to Mississippi.

The suspect's brother says he was likely under the influence of narcotics at the time of the incident, as he has a history of struggling with addiction.

The suspect's brother also says that he forgives his brother and that if their mother were still living, she also would forgive her son.

Of course, the brother is getting ahead of himself there. The suspect is considered innocent by law until proven guilty. A criminal lawyer's job is to ensure that his rights are fully protected throughout the criminal proceedings and present a vigorous, effective defense.
