More than 700 arrested for DUI in Colorado over Labor Day

Police officers in Colorado Springs and other cities across the state have arrested more than 700 drivers for DUI in the past couple of weeks as part of the annual Labor Day drunk driving crackdown.

This year's effort started Aug. 19 and ended Tuesday.

The campaign was called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and was part of a national effort by police officers, state troopers and sheriff's deputies to reduce DUIs across the U.S.

In Colorado, the State Patrol and 106 other law enforcement agencies worked together to increase patrols, conduct sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols.

The media report didn't distinguish between alleged DUI and DWAI infractions during the holiday crackdown.

In Colorado, a DUI refers to driving under the influence and DWAI is an abbreviation of the offense of driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

If a person takes a blood test or breath test that indicates a blood alcohol level of more than .05 but less than .08, they can be cited for DWAI. If their blood alcohol level is at least .08, they can be cited for DUI.

Penalties are can be stiff:

  • A first-time DUI conviction can mean a license suspension of nine months and 12 points added to the driver's record.
  • A first-time DWAI doesn't result in a license suspension, but it can add eight points to a driving record.
  • A second DUI conviction can mean a license suspension of a year and 12 points on the driving record.
  • A second DWAI can also result in a year's suspension, coupled with eight points.

Obviously, these penalties can have serious consequences on a person's ability to drive to work or school. A conviction can also make auto insurance premiums skyrocket.

Anyone facing these penalties should contact an experienced defense attorney to discuss options and possible alternatives to these stiff sentences.
