No matter who you are, a Colorado DUI can affect your job

The list of possible consequences following conviction for a Colorado DUI is long: jail time, fines, license suspension, community service, probation and alcohol treatment programs.

It doesn't end there, of course. The aftereffects can spread from the legal system to your financial life (increased auto insurance rates) and your job.

Recent examples of how a DUI can affect a person's employment come from north of Colorado Springs, where an Aurora SWAT officer has been reassigned to desk duty after his arrest for driving under the influence.

The 50-year-old is a decorated officer: he has been awarded the department's Medal of Honor, as well as its Distinguished Service Cross. He has also been cited by the police chief as part of a Unit Citation for excellent police work.

Despite his medals and commendations, the 29-year veteran of the department has been moved from his long-time position on the SWAT unit to a desk job at the Aurora municipal building, however.

Another Aurora police officer busted for DUI earlier this year resigned after his arrest for drunk driving. He and another officer were driving through Wyoming in a police cruiser on their way to a police officer's funeral in South Dakota when they were pulled over.

The driver got a DUI and the passenger was cited for littering. Both resigned a few days later.

Another officer was fired after he was twice busted for DUI. However, he appealed his firing to the civil service commission. The firing was overturned; he was instead suspended from his job for six months.

All are good examples of the detrimental effect a DUI can have on a person's job and career, as well as excellent examples of why people should fight a DUI charge with the help of experienced, effective legal counsel.
