Homeless, registered sex offender accused of Colorado Springs murder

A 19-year-old Colorado Springs man has been accused by police of killing a 20-year-old man, also a resident of Colorado Springs. The alleged homicide resulted in the suspect's arrest after the deceased's body was discovered on the morning of Aug. 17.

The body appeared to have been struck several times with a sharp object, according to personnel from the El Paso County Coroner's Office who performed the autopsy. The autopsy concluded that the death was a homicide.

This was the 18th such murder in the city in 2011, an increase from the 16 homicides which occurred in Colorado Springs in the equivalent period in 2010.

The beaten body of the victim was encountered by a hiker in a field behind an apartment building on the south side of town.

Police officers stated that their investigation into the details of the crime was ongoing, and could not, at this time, make any disclosures about the specifics of the killing.

The dead man was a graduate of a Colorado Springs high school. As a minor, he resided with his family in both Germany and Denver before coming to Colorado Springs. The family moved frequently because his father was then serving in the U.S. military.

The arrestee has a prior conviction for sexual assault and is listed in the state sexual offender registry as a homeless person residing at a particular intersection in the city.

The arrestee was denied bail and is in custody in the county jail.

Anyone who has a criminal record and is then arrested on a violent crime charge must face the reality that they could spend a long time in prison if they're convicted of the charge. It makes the assistance of a criminal defense attorney experienced both in negotiations and taking a case to trial vital.
